4 Hours of Instruction: Earns 0.4 CEU / 4 PDH
Now accepting registrations for program beginning April 29, 2010
Presented online in a series of two live two-hour time modules, this seminar provides a detailed introduction to the concepts and practices involved in development of sustainable green LEED® certified buildings, covering both LEED for New Construction (NC) and LEED for Existing Buildings (EB).

You can participate in the seminar from your office, home, or anywhere you have access to the internet and a phone. You'll have opportunities to interact with your instructor and colleagues in real time during the two live teleconferencing sessions.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR
What exactly are the criteria for defining a building as "green"? What are the economics and benefits of green construction or retrofit? And how can one determine whether a particular building or site is suitable for sustainable green design? This program will address these questions, and provide you with a fundamental understanding of the sustainable green building, the role of LEED, and how to approach a potential green building project.

What Is LEED?
Created by the U.S. Green Building Council in order to more clearly define "green building" and to create a framework for assessing building performance, the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™ is a voluntary, consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings.

What You'll Learn at This Program...
Beginning with an overview of sustainability, including the role of the U.S. Green Building Council and its LEED program, your instructor will fully explain the benefits of green buildings from the perspectives of the building owner, the occupants, and the community. Both objective and subjective benefits will be discussed, including such areas as overall economics, impact on employee productivity and learning environments for students, and better marketability of a facility.

You'll learn about the LEED New Contruction (NC) Rating System, including each of the five major categories of prerequisites and credits. You'll get the facts on how the design engineering team can account for more than half of the possible credits that make up a LEED certified facility. The instructor will take you through a step-by-step overview of the building certification process -- and specifically, what to do once you have decided that you want to build a green building. LEED NC 2009 places a greater emphasis on energy than earlier NC versions, and this seminar will explain these changes, showing you the best approaches to earning energy credits for your project. Also discussed will be the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guide and Standards 90.1 for Energy Efficiency, and 62.1 for Indoor Air Quality.

The next portion of the program examines LEED for Existing Buildings (EB), showing how it is derived from LEED NC, and explaining both the similarities and differences. Fundamentally, whereas LEED NC is primarily the realm of the design and construction community, LEED EB is centered on facility operations & maintenance. You'll gain a better understanding of why LEED EB Operations & Maintenance is of such great importance to the energy management field, as well as why it is considered a potentially critical element in achieving the nation's overall energy goals. The economic benefits of LEED EB will be examined, as well as the details of its system of prerequisites and credits. This discussion will include an introduction to the Energy Star Portfolio Manager Program, and its use to document energy performance for the purpose of earning energy credits in LEED EB. Also covered will be a summary of LEED for Core & Shell and LEED for Commercial Interiors.

This seminar is intended to provide a foundation of knowledge for those interested in learning more about LEED. Also discussed will be the potential importance of green professional skills and how they may enhance job-hunting opportunities. For those who may be interested in pursuing further study and/or achieving LEED Accredited Professional status, the instructor will explain where to go from here.
