This two-hour online seminar provides an overview of the requirements of the ENERGY STAR rating system for commericial buildings and examines the specific role of the Professional Engineer or AEE certified Green Building Engineer (GBE) in verifying that commercial facilities meet requirements for the U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR designation.

You can participate in the seminar from your office, home, or anywhere you have access to the internet and a phone. You'll have opportunities to interact with your instructor and colleagues in real time during the two-hour live teleconferencing session.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR
The U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR program is a voluntary partnership between business, utilities, associations and government which provides an established framework to promote the environmental and financial benefits of improved energy performance. ENERGY STAR offers guidance, tools, and resources to help organizations achieve superior energy performance.

ENERGY STAR offers the ability to rate the energy performance of commercial buildings on a 1 to 100 scale using EPA's Portfolio Manager. Portfolio Manager is an on-line, interactive, software tool that makes rating energy performance simple and accessible. Based on a building's physical and operating characteristics, the rating system evaluates the energy performance of a building relative to other buildings with similar characteristics in the United States.

THE ROLE OF THE PROSESSIONAL ENGINEER

A major portion of this seminar will clarify the roles and responsibilities of the Professional Engineer. A building whose energy performance is rated 75 or higher qualifies for the ENERGY STAR label. After a building qualifies, a Professional Engineer (PE) must verify the building's physical characteristics, operating characteristics, and energy consumption in conjunction with the overall indoor environment of the building according to accepted industry standards. This program will cover the role and responsibilities of the Professional Engineer in effectively carrying out this verification process in commercial facilities.

Through 2007, the EPA has awarded the prestigious ENERGY STAR to more than 4,000 commercial and institutional buildings representing more than 740 million square feet nationwide for their energy management practices and focus on energy efficiency.
