Presented online in a series of three live 2 hour time modules, this seminar is designed to provide the knowledge, procedures, and techniques needed to understand, test and balance the air side of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) constant air volume and variable air volume systems.
You can participate in the seminar from your office, home, or anywhere you have access to the internet and a phone or VOIP. You'll have opportunities to interact with your instructor and colleagues in real time during the two live, interactive online sessions.
AIA Learning Units Eligible
This course has been approved by AIA for continuing education credits. The AIA requires that its registered architect members earn 18 Learning Unit (LU) hours of continuing education credit annually (eight hours of which must be related to Health, Safety, and Welfare topics and four of those eight in Sustainable Design) to remain in good standing. Architectural boards in 40 states, 10 Canadian Provinces, and 19 countries have implemented mandatory continuing education (MCE) for re-licensure.
The Association of Energy Engineers is an approved training provider within the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Continuing Education Systems (CES) Registered Provider program.
About This Seminar
This practical and informative course will begin with a brief review of HVAC airside components as well as forms used in testing and balancing. Full coverage will also be provided of the instruments which are necessary to test:
- Fan and motor rotational speeds
- Fan motor voltage and amperage
- Fan and duct pressures
- System and component air velocity and volume
The instructor will then explain in easy-to-follow terms the equations and calculations which are needed to test and balance air systems. You will learn specific procedures and methods utilized in air testing and balancing, accompanied by numerous examples to illustrate the details, including filling out test and balance forms. Both read- and-set and proportional balancing methods for constant air volume and variable air volume systems will be covered.
This course is designed to be of value to anyone interested in learning about air systems testing and balancing, including both those interested in working in the field or starting a test and balance agency, as well as architects, HVAC engineers, building and engineering managers, building reps, utilities reps, and commissioning agencies. Material covered can also provide relevant and helpful training for those preparing for certification exams in the areas of testing and balancing, commissioning or energy management.

Your Realtime Program Instructor
SAMUEL SUGARMAN, C.E.M., C.T.A.B., C.D.S.M., C.I.A.Q.M., is an internationally recognized HVAC and TAB consultant, instructor and author. He has consulted on projects for testing and balancing, performance evaluation, design, retrofit and commissioning of HVAC systems for cleanroom facilities, corporate headquarters, government facilities, office complexes, hotels, hospitals, fume hood labs, major retail establishments, military installations, nuclear power plants, private and public schools, colleges and universities. Mr. Sugarman was an adjunct professor at San Diego City College, and has also instructed over 250 HVAC, TAB and energy management training programs and seminars for various organizations, including AEE, ASHRAE, and the National Energy Management Institute. He has authored several books and training manuals in on topics in the areas of his expertise. He currently serves as Board Chairman of the International Registry of CTAB Professionals, and has received numerous awards and special recognition for his expertise and accomplishments in the field.
Course Materials and Advance Preparations
The seminar fee covers registration for all three two-hour program modules, seminar workbook (downloadable PDF format), course certificate, and webinar connection services. Does not include tollfree number. Attendees participating from outside of North America should use VOIP in order to avoid additional audio fees. Payment in full must be received prior to the start date of the seminar.
You will receive instructions, personal support, and a chance to test your teleconferencing connection in advance of the first session.
