AIA Learning Units Eligible

This course has been approved by AIA for continuing education credits. The AIA requires that its registered architect members earn 18 Learning Unit (LU) hours of continuing education credit annually (eight hours of which must be related to Health, Safety, and Welfare topics and four of those eight in Sustainable Design) to remain in good standing. Architectural boards in 40 states, 10 Canadian Provinces, and 19 countries have implemented mandatory continuing education (MCE) for re-licensure.

The Association of Energy Engineers is an approved training provider within the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Continuing Education Systems (CES) Registered Provider program.


DARYL BROWN is a senior staff engineer at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where he has worked for the past 37 years. The majority of his experience has been associated with the evaluation of advanced energy technologies, with the results of his work documented in more than 200 publications. Mr. Brown specializes in cost estimating and life-cycle costing for all types of technologies and has conducted many preliminary engineering feasibility studies. His recent worked has focused on cost and performance analyses of hydrogen delivery systems for fuel cell vehicles and building energy systems at U.S. Army facilities. Mr. Brown has a B.S. in chemical engineering from Oregon State University and an M.B.A. from the University of Washington.

Presented online in a series of two live 2-hour time modules, this seminar is designed to show you how to utilize life cycle cost or discounted cash flow analysis as an effective tool to quantitatively assess potential energy cost reducing investments.

You can participate in the seminar from your office, home, or anywhere you have access to the internet and a phone or VOIP. You'll have opportunities to interact with your instructor and colleagues in real time during the two live, interactive online sessions.


This is an introductory course on discounted cash flow analysis, also known as life-cycle cost analysis. More specifically, the course will provide instruction on how to calculate project economic "figures-of-merit" such as

  • Net present value
  • Internal rate of return
  • Levelized cost
  • Projected payback

The first portion of the program will cover the terminology and mathematics of discounted cash flow analysis. The second portion will describe and exemplify use of an Excel spreadsheet for use in calculating the specific economic "figures-of-merit" for a project under consideration. The course will be conducted in an interactive style, and students will be encouraged to ask questions as the material is presented. Practice "homework" will also be provided in both sessions.

While this seminar is appropriate for those with no prior training or experience with the topic, it is also designed to serve as a valuable refresher course, presenting important updates on how to utilize the most up-to-date analysis techniques for those who do have prior experience in the field.

You will leave this program with a much clearer understanding of what discounted cash flow analysis encompasses, and how to optimally apply it to assess and economically evaluate strategies and projects under consideration for meeting your organization's energy cost reduction goals.
